Before 1888, Virginia’s colors were actually gray and cardinal red. A meeting was called to address the fact that those colors did not show up well on football fields at the time. The story goes that a student athlete who had returned from a summer trip from the University of Oxford wore a navy and orange scarf from his travels to the meeting; a fellow student pointed out the color combo, which was adopted then and there.
